Regina McCombs recently emailed me about an upcoming seminar from August 25-27 at The Poynter Institute that II readers may be interested in attending. Titled “Programming for Journalists / Journalism for Programmers,” attendees will gain a concrete understanding of how programmers and journalists can work effectively together to visualize data-rich content, such as the upcoming 2010 Census.

Her dedication and contribution to the field, both past and present, garnered her this week’s selection for “Innovative Individual.”


The importance of professional organizations in our industry

With tight budgets these days, memberships to professional organizations might be the first to get the boot. However, I would argue that these organizations are one of the only things keeping us going in these hard times. Think about it: where else do passionate members congregate at annual meetings to better their craft, and dedicated volunteers organize and judge competitions to highlight exceptional work?
