SND revamps SNDies competition – entries due January 12th!

Posted on

If you were wondering what happened to SNDies, an online web competition that I judged the past two years, it underwent a redesign and will now be an annual digital design competition. 2010 sites must be submitted by January 12th for consideration.

The full email announcing the new contest is below. Looks like digital.snd.org is the official page to upload your submissions, although they’re not accepting them just yet. Fees are $15 per entry for students, $20 per entry for SND members and $30 per entry for non-members.

Today I’m very pleased to announce an expanded SND competition to recognize and celebrate the work we do online. The ‘Best of Digital Design’ competition will be an annual juried competition held by the Society for News Design to recognize excellence in design and usability of digital news design, information graphics and photography.

The competition is open to all Web sites dedicated to the presentation of news. It is not necessary that these sites are part of a newspaper or magazine organization. All submissions must have been posted to the Web between January 1, 2010 and Dec. 31, 2010. It is not necessary to be a member of SND to participate. The competition is limited to live Web pages and applications.

This competition has evolved from SND¹s former ‘Best of Multimedia’ Creative Competition and represents an expansion of the competition’s categories. Winners of quarterly awards from 2010 in the categories of Breaking News Presentation and Non-breaking News Presentation are automatically entered for consideration by the judges for an annual award. Beginning in 2011 the quarterly awards will be discontinued.

You’ll be receiving more information, including a link to a new site created by volunteers Joey Marburger and Yuri Victor and with the guidance of Ryan Sparrow. The site will include a lot of information and answer your questions about the divisons, competition categories, the evaluation criteria, entry fees and the judging process and awards.

The deadline for submitting work will be January 12, 2011. Judging will take place in January and February.

Here are the categories:

1. WORLD’S BEST-DESIGNED NEWS SITES/APPS
2. SECTION/TOPIC PRESENTATION
3. BREAKING NEWS PRESENTATION
4. EXTENDED COVERAGE
5. INNOVATION
6. PHOTO PROJECTS
7. USE OF MULTIMEDIA
8. INTERACTIVE INFORMATION GRAPHICS
9. VIDEO PROJECTS
10. WEB SITE REDESIGN
11. MOBILE DESIGN
12. NEWS-BASED APP

This project has been in the works for the past several months, and we
appreciate the help and feedback we’ve received from several people
throughout the process. And a special thanks to Laura Ruel at the University
of North Carolina, who originated the SND digital competition in 2002 and
continues to assist and advise.

Again, the link to the new competition site will be coming shortly.

We’re looking forward to seeing and celebrating the work you have created
in 2010, whether in print, online, on a tablet or a mobile device.

Sincerely,

Stephen Komives, Executive Director, SND
